Cybersecurity in Eurotherm Products

The advent of Industry 4.0 and the rapid adoption of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is giving rise to many new opportunities, as long as your processes are well protected. An effective industrial cybersecurity strategy is typically based on a defense-in-depth approach to achieve multiple layers of physical and digital protection.

Eurotherm controller and data acquisition products normally reside in the process control level behind a firewall. Our product ranges include communication robustness and user access features, helping to protect production processes from being compromised by cyber-attacks as part of a defense in depth strategy:

  • Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) - This provides secure file transfer over a Secure Shell (SSH) connection. Data is encrypted before transmission to prevent sensitive data, for example, username, password and production process data from being disclosed over the network. In Eurotherm products that support this feature, SFTP can be used to archive recorded data, for example, process values, alarms, messages and batch information over a network, helping to protect your data transfer in accordance with IEC 62443 guidelines.

    • 6100A/6180A Paperless Graphic Recorders - A range of graphic data recorders designed to meet the data integrity requirements of a variety of industrial regulatory standards.

    • 6100E Paperless Graphic Recorder - Eurotherm recording excellence in a basic/entry level package. Designed to provide data integrity for simple data recording requirements.

    • 6100XIO/6180XIO Distributed Graphic Recorders - This range offers operator interfaces and Eurotherm data integrity for visualization of data recorded from remote I/O devices.

    • Data Reviewer Software - A software application for the viewing, analysis, and printing of historical data files acquired from Eurotherm data acquisition equipment. With the Auditor option, a full audit trail is provided for annotations and excursion information, with user authentication and electronic signatures to facilitate accountability, integrity, and confidentiality of the source data.

    • Bridge Visualization Software - A software package providing access to networked 6000 Series data recorders from any PC anywhere in the world via a similar user interface to the product. With the correct security access permissions, the user can view live and historical data, operation, and configuration information. Each user can have a specific username and password with customized security access, allowing permission to features, for example, from just viewing data, to control of batches, through to full configuration.

    • Security Manager Software - A centralized security system where usernames, passwords, and access permissions can be controlled. Provides tamper-resistant audit trails, unique passwords and electronic signature authorization. Security Manager includes settings and permissions to aid compliance with regulations, for example, United States Food and Drug Administration 21 Code of Federal Regulations Part 11 (FDA 21 CFR Part 11) and guidelines such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the Attributable, Legible, Contemporaneous, Original, Accurate, Complete, Consistent, Enduring and Available (ALCOA+) data integrity concept in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Achilles certification - This independent certification demonstrates the robustness of products when subjected to a wide range of demanding communication conditions. Products with Achilles Level 1 Certification:

  • Password based user access - The IEC 62443 standard states that industrial control systems should be able to authenticate and authorize human users. Cyber security requirements and guidance no longer recommends the use of hard-coded user passwords, therefore internet of things (IoT) devices must have the functionality to create unique passwords or prompt for users to set a password before they have access. Eurotherm products are available with password controlled user access features to aid defense-in-depth strategies in industrial control systems. Typical features include, Ethernet communications and file transfer protocol (FTP) server functionality disabled until an Engineer account password is created. Operator and Supervisor accounts are disabled until unique passwords are created and common passwords are not supported. All helping to limit access only to authorized job roles for improved cybersecurity. Products with user access control features:
