Understanding Runtime Status Indicators

If a channel cannot calculate a value due to, for example, invalid or missing inputs or configuration issues, the operator panel displays a status message such as Invalid or Off. These indicators provide insight into the current condition of the channel. For example, I/O HARDWARE displays when the I/O hardware source is not functioning correctly:

Tip - The status indicators appear wherever a related value is displayed, applying to all value types in the system such as I/O channels or Maths channels.

The status indicators within the EPM Data Management are:

Status Description

Invalid

System Alarm - Data is not reliable due to issues or invalid conditions, for example, a large over voltage with direction undetectable on an AI2 input set to Volt Input Type triggers the channel's hardware protection circuit and prevents any valid reading from being produced.

Off

The channel associated with the Input Value is off and not updating.

I/O Hardware

The I/O hardware source is not functioning correctly.

Ranging

The I/O hardware is being configured for the required input range.

Configuration Error

A hardware or software misconfiguration. For example:

  • Hardware configured beyond its capabilities, for example, input configured for 0 - 40 V while the hardware supports only up to 12 V.

  • Analog input channel configured with an invalid input, for example, Input Type is RTD while Linearization Type is K (thermocouple).

No Data

Insufficient input data. This may occur due to a communication issue or when a rolling average has not accumulated enough data to begin updating.

Not Representable

When converting one data type to another, and the source value cannot be represented in the destination.

Uninitialized

The Input Value has never been updated. Typically used by sub-systems other than I/O.

Calibration Error

(only available for modules that are factory calibrated)

System Alarm - A calibration issue has been detected.

Note - Calibration error is not related to User Calibration.

Input Over Range

Process Alarm - The value derived from the input signal is above the configured High threshold, see the Input Check tab  in Configuring an Analog Input Channel for details. .

The Input Over Range status may also raise when the internal analog-to-digital converter (ADC) saturates at its higher limit.

Input Under Range

Process Alarm - The value derived from the input signal is below the configured Low threshold, see the Input Check tab  in Configuring an Analog Input Channel for details.

The Input Under Range status may also raise when the internal analog-to-digital converter (ADC) saturates at its lower limit.

Sensor Break

System Alarm - The sensor is disconnected or not detected.

Clipped

System Alarm - The value is out of the Linearization table (if in use). For example, a Thermocouple Type K temperature reading above the supported range of 1372 °C will be clipped to 1372 °C. The value flags as truncated to indicate it may not reflect the true condition.

Calibrating

(only available for channels that support User Calibration)
